Executive Art Editor -Hamlyn (including the imprints of Gaia and Godsfield Press)
We are looking for a creative and motivated designer to work with the Hamlyn team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in co-edition colour reference books. Skills in Quark and Photoshop are essential, as well as experience of art directing shoots across many subject matters, especially food and people/lifestyle.
The ideal candidate will be able to manage budgets and schedules, as well as liaise with and commission illustrators, photographers and freelance designers. The candidate should be an excellent typographer and be capable of innovative jacket design.
The work involves taking titles through from presentation stage to finished repro, so a good knowledge of the book-making process is essential.

CARTOGRAPHIC EDITOR WORLD ATLASES
Philip’s publish a wide range of world reference atlases, school atlases and reference maps for the UK and produce versions of these for foreign language markets. We also publish street atlases, road atlases and astronomy books.
We have a vacancy in our reference atlas editorial department, based at the Octopus Publishing Group’s offices in London’s Docklands. The position involves:
Preparation of clear and detailed layouts, schemes, specifications, designs, instructions and copy to produce high quality maps and atlases on tight production schedules
Detailed checking of map and index proofs at all stages of production
Liaising with the editorial, production, sales and marketing staff
Monitoring the progress of jobs in terms of production schedules and outwork costs
Maintenance of world statistics on Excel and the production of world statistical tables for school and reference atlases in Quark or InDesign
Production of prelims, endpapers and front sections in Quark or InDesign using existing maps, graphs, artwork and text
Researching and acquiring suitable source material including statistics, source maps and articles
Production of index conversion lists and index copy in the form of annotated print-outs or Excel files
You will need a degree in geography or cartography or at least three years’ cartographic experience. The ability to work to tight production deadlines, whilst maintaining a high degree of accuracy and enthusiasm, is essential. Numeracy, research and organisational skills are a must. A good knowledge of current world affairs, a modern foreign language and a sound practical knowledge of current cartographic production methods would be advantageous. Knowledge of Excel, Quark, InDesign and Illustrator would be an advantage, too.
